Adidas Originals’ New Futurepacer Is a Micropacer and NMD Hybrid

Old meets new.

Adidas Originals continues to bring back archive models with recent revivals such as the Rascal and Ultra Tech. This time, the Three Stripes throws back to the iconic 1984 Micropacer, revamping it with modern NMD blueprints for a new hybrid silhouette known as the Futurepacer.

During the time of its inception, the Micropacer was the sneaker of the future: the first “smart shoe” featuring a computerized microsensor that calculated distance, running pace and calorie burn, all of which was displayed on a small analog LCD screen at the shoe’s metallic silver tongue. Despite its technological advancement, the Micropacer was a commercial flop due to its steep price and being “terribly heavy.” However, 34 years down the line, the Micropacer’s legacy lives on via its distinctive look.

The 2018 Futurepacer offshoot maintains the Micropacer’s signature tongue tab, overall silhouette and futuristic design (adjusted to current tastes). What’s new is a streamlined panel design that strips away the Three Stripes branding and astro-silver colorway, and the addition of a full-length NMD BOOST sole unit for the best of modern sneaker technology.

The adidas Originals Futurepacer’s debut “Grey One” colorway will release on June 9 for $180 USD at adidas’ online store and Original retailers worldwide.
